Plaxico Burress: Ask Questions First, Shoot Later.

By The Funkadelic Relic

Help me keep Da Blaq Hole poppin'! Donate any amount!

Ever since the story about Plaxico Burress shooting himself in a New York City nightclub hit the news and Mayor Bloomberg got on TV proclaiming that Burress would "go to prison" for shooting himself had me thinking about the situation that Burress is in now every time I heard about him on the radio, read about him in the newspaper or internet and saw reports about his pending suspension from the NFL and of course, how much money he would lose because of his failure to procure a registered firearm with the proper permit to conceal and carry it on him.

Plaxico Burress will not play for the Giants for the rest of the season. He has been suspended without pay, fined and placed on the reserve list for a nonfootball injury.

The injury, a self-inflicted gunshot wound, occurred early Saturday morning at a nightclub in Manhattan. Along with other previous violations of team rules, Burress has displayed “conduct detrimental to the team,” the Giants said.

The decision is the latest in a downward spiral for Burress, an elite wide receiver who caught the winning touchdown pass in last season’s Super Bowl and signed a five-year, $35 million contract hours before the season opener.

Previously this season, Burress was suspended for one game and for two weeks of practice after missing a mandatory team meeting. He was held out of the first quarter of another game as punishment for missing a required medical treatment.

It's interesting how the news media covered this story about a famous NFL athlete shooting himself and the New York City Police Department killing an unarmed citizen in the middle of a busy street and NOT going to prison at all.

Yes, the Sean Bell incident immediately came to mind. 50 shots. Unarmed. Police aquitted on all charges. The coverage of that incident was totally different. I don't remember Bloomberg making any comments at that time about this particular incident where guns were discharged over 50 times and left one man dead. They said that even the testimony given by Sean Bell's friends were "unbelievable". I BELIEVE that at the scene of this crime. Yes it was clearly a crime. There was NOT one weapon found that belonged to or was possessed by Sean Bell or his friends so why did the police shoot him so many times? It may seem like these two incidents are unrelated, but they aren't. They both happened in New York City and resulted in a court case. Which Plaxico Burress certainly will get. A court case.

SEAN BELL VERDICT VIDEO

At least the players union is backing Plaxico up. He is innocent until proven guilty...or is he? It was only a few short years ago this guy was in East Lansing, Michigan catching touchdown passes for the Michigan State Spartans and I won't even mention how things were going for him this time last yearin New York City and everybody seemed to love him. How quickly things change in America and yet, they remain the same....

We can't discount the impact of all of the shootings, robberies and home invasions of NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball players over the last few years. It's open season on the rich and famous and cats are going by the credo..."I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6." Like the American Express Card...they are not leaving home without their guns.

*Notice that the mainstream news media isn't reporting about the players who are being robbed, kidnapped, carjacked and shot as much as they report about Michael Vick, O.J., Tim Montgomery, Marion Jones, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark Cuban....do I need to continue?*

Let's review this again. Plaxico Burress was arrested for shooting himself..nobody was hurt except him and he could potentially lose millions of dollars and go to prison.

The NYPD fired at Amadou Diallo 41 times, and fired at Sean Bell and two of his friends 50 times (that's 91 total shots if you are keeping track)...both Bell and Diallo are dead and both of the men that were with Sean Bell were injured and not one New York Police Officer went to prison. None of 'em. . . .

Amadou Diallo

Sean Bell

I forgot to add the fact that Sean Bell was going to get later on that same day and left behind two small children and his fiancee, Nicole Paultre.

So I'm sure a lot of you watched the Super Bowl last year and when New York did the Patriots in you certainly had an opinion....so what do you think about this?

Hip Hop Against Hunger

By The Funkadelic Relic

HIP HOP AGAINST HUNGER DANCE-A-THON

Proposal:
To organize an event to raise money to help agencies to feed hungry and homeless children in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

September is Hunger Action Month...The Hip Hop Community Must Act Now!

A Hip Hop Against Hunger Dance-A-Thon
Students in K-12 schools would solicit pledges from donors (all donations resulting from the pledges would be collected by the agency that would benefit from the proceeds from the event). People who attend the event could also bring canned goods or make voluntary donations the day of the dance-a-thon.

Why is this necessary?
Unfortunately, since about 2000 not many people are finding good paying jobs for the most part, especially in the state of Michigan where we live.

For the month of July 2008, the Michigan Unemployment Rate (seasonally adjusted) was 8.5%. up 1.4% since last year at the same time. The total number of payroll jobs for the month of July 2008 was 4,213,000. Over 5,000 jobs were lost in the state during the month of July. Since last year 49,000 jobs were lost. Don't believe it? Peep the links below.

Michigan Employment Snapshot

Historical Unemployment Rates

Current Michigan Unadjusted Job Levels by Industry

Historical Job Levels by Industry & Area

One of the most pressing problems we are facing in our state is the hunger. Children are not receiving the proper nutrition daily and the community as a whole must come together and try new and innovative ideas to help solve this serious problem. During the Great Depression
of 1929 the conditions were very similar to the conditions today in 2008. Home foreclosures, high consumer and business dept, ill regulated markets and natural disasters.

Food pantries, homeless shelters and other agencies that help those who need it the most to survive and feed their famiies are feeling a pinch like never before and anything that can be done to raise money to help fund these agencies is a necessity during these most trying times. During a visit recently to the Heartside District in the city of Grand Rapids an idea to help one agency in
particular that provides services to the homeless, Dégagé Ministries, provides the following services:

Referral Desk

Hygiene Services

Basic Needs

Support Groups

State ID Program

Legal Services

Pet Therapy

Job Center

If you turn on your television, look in the newspaper, listen to radio or browse the internet during Labor Day weekend you will see a lot of advertisements for the The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon that airs every year on national television on Labor Day.

The same concept to raise money could be used to help an agency in our local area like Degage Ministries. Instead of a telethon where people only call in to make donations an event using the power and influence of Hip Hop Culture, specifically the element of dance could be organized to involve children in our community using their energy in a positive way in a positive setting to help other children and have a lot of fun at the same time. It really would be a great event if available resources were utilized properly and the promotion of the event was correctly implemented.

There are very talented people in the city of Grand Rapids and the West Michigan area who are willing to help. They should be allowed to do so with support, not interference. The Circle Junkeez Crew, of Holland are ready to do what they can to help feed the kids of our city who deserve so much more than they are receiving right now.

Check Out The Circle Junkeez Crew on YouTube!

How would this event work? The principle is so very simple and would involve the entire community. If the city and public schools were involved the event would be a huge success. The March Of Dimes puts on "walks" all over the country where people who volunteer to walk collect pledges from others who "sponsor" them to participate and all proceeds of donations go to the March of Dimes. The only difference here with this event would be that each participant (preferably children in elementary to middle school) would collect pledges (a flat fee for participating in the dance-a-thon). They could dance for as long as they want to and the pledges collected would go to feed the hungry. Directly to the agency that needs help. An event like this would also promote physical fitness and get some of our kids up off the couch, out from in front of the television and the video games. This makes too much sense right now. Just click the link:

Obesity In Children And Teens

The best time to schedule an event like a Dance-A-Thon to feed the hungry and homeless children in our city would be around the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday. During this time of the year people will feel the most compassion for those in our neighborhoods who need the help. People seem to be more willing to give and donate things during these 2 holidays. The rest of the year people don't seem to care as much. There are days when school will be out and our children will need something positive to occupy their time. This is it. It can work with the proper planning, support and participation.

Sponsorship: The key to encouraging participation in the event.
Corporate sponsors would provide prizes which would drawn randomly during the event. Participants (dancers) would be eligible for these prizes and the winners would have to be present to win. The sponsors would also provide financial support to promote the event on television, radio and in print. Of couse all of the websites of the sponsors would also have links in place for people who just want to donate. Examples of potential prizes donated by sponsors that would be appealing to kids ranging in age from 5-13 would be Gift Certificates to Sporting Goods stores, Movie theaters, Video Games, Skateboard Stores, Skate Parks, Toys R Us, Circuit City...the possibilities are endless and appealing!

Support of City, County and State Governmental agencies is another key to success:
Mayor George Heartwell served for 14 years at Heartside Ministry, a program for the homeless in Grand Rapids. Mayor Heartwell has interacted with the Hip Hop Community in our city before to find solutions to the problem of youth violence. If anyone understands how serious this problem is in our community, Mayor Heartwell does.

As administrator of the site GrandRapidsHipHop.com I interact with young people all the time who want to do something positive with their talent and energy. Given the opportunity they usually deliver every time. The most important thing about an event like a Dance-A-Thon is that it will be so much fun! Kids want to help. Look at some examples of what our young people are doing given the proper direction and support.

Dance-A-Thon: Fundraising Ideas-What Works

If you also believe that this event would be worth trying to make happen hit me back by email at thefunkadelicrelic@yahoo.com. The Hip Hop Community wants to make a difference if given a chance. This is only one possibility of positive ways that Hip Hop Culture can be utilized to make a difference in our community.

Nas-Sly Fox Video

Nas Set To Rule Next U.S. Album Chart
Veteran rapper Nas is on course to notch his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 when data are issued Wednesday, but sales will likely be considerably lower than those for his previous release.

Nas' untitled Def Jam release -- originally set to be called "Nigger" -- sold 113,000 copies during its first three days of sale through Thursday, tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan said.

Rapper Nas 'Untitled,' Unbowed Over Epithet
By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

Nas spent months trying to keep the N-word as his new album's name. But with the untitled disc set for release July 15, he's just glad it's finally getting out.
"I didn't want to push it back any more," says Nas (aka Nasir Jones), 34. "People are pointing at hip-hop, saying, 'Why are you using this language?' I wanted to go to the root of the problem."

Both outrage and praise greeted his announcement of the title last October. The NAACP, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were critical, while Island Def Jam chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid and Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Akon voiced support.

But the marketplace and the public determine if a title is acceptable, says David Ehrlich, an entertainment lawyer who works with hip-hop stars. "With the sale of CDs dominated by large mass merchants, the record labels tend to be restrictive in terms of what they allow as not to alienate customers," he says.

Review by Andy Reid of The Independent (UK)
Review by Katie Hintz of The Village Voice

I have listened to the whole CD and the subject matter is really good. Some of the beats are average, but overall it is better than a lot of the stuff I hear on the radio (at least for me...I like to hear about different topics other than the same old tired topics)I have read the reviews.

It seems like Nas has been getting a lot of bad press. I wonder why? Maybe it has something to do with the way his new CD was presented...but I ain't mad at him. He's just telling it like he sees it and what more can he do? People are talking about how he's pointing fingers and not offering solutions. You can't solve any problem until you recognize you have it. He's not a part of the problem, he's trying to be a part of a solution. I like what he's saying on his new video for sure. He just used the "n" word to promote his joint and now he can say it again..."made you look". A lot of people are voicing their opinion about Nas now. Let's see how many units he sells this week.

You can buy the whole CD and download it right now by clicking the image below!

NBA Finals 2008! Celtics Win in 6!

By The Funkadelic Relic

Help me keep Da Blaq Hole poppin'! Donate any amount!

Celtics Blast Lakers 131-92 in Game 6 & Win 17th NBA Championship!

June 18, 2008

With Russell and Havlicek sitting courtside, and Red surely lighting up a victory cigar somewhere, these Boston Celtics returned to glory like the great teams before them.

Dominant in every way.

On a new parquet floor below aging championship banners hung in the rafters two decades back, the Celtics won their 17th NBA title and a first one—at last — for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen—their Big Three for a new generation.

After 22 long years, the NBA has gone green.

Lifted by ear-splitting chants of “Beat L.A.” early and cries of “Seven-teen” in the closing seconds by their adoring crowd, the Celtics concluded a shocking rebound of a season with a stunning 131-92 blowout over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 on Tuesday night.

“It means so much more because these are the guys, the Havliceks, the Bill Russells, the Cousys,” Pierce said. “These guys started what’s going on with those banners. They don’t hang up any other banners but championship ones.

“And now I’m a part of it.”

With the outcome assured, Boston fans sang into the night as if they were in a pub on nearby Canal Street. They serenaded the newest champs in this city of champs, and taunted Kobe Bryant and his Lakers, who drowned in a green-and-white wave for 48 minutes.

Garnett scored 26 points with 14 rebounds, Allen scored 26 and Pierce, the finals MVP who shook off a sprained right knee sustained in Game 1, added 17 as the Celtics, a 24-win team a year ago, wrapped up their first title since 1986. Click here to read the full story
